Austin,
I love your term "gospel crush" because it speaks the way I also feel about Brother England's work. I joined the church in 1980 and during the first few years of my membership I was given this marked up 'paper' called "Why the church is more true then the Gospel" Draft: August 17, 1984 By Eugene England. It provided a spiritual anchor for me many times over the years when my curious nature searched for insights about "churchy" superficial things. I have been so grateful for the strength of Eugene's testimony shared in this document even though I did not really 'discover' Eugene England and his writings until 2005. (For 20 years I thought Eugene was a female). Heavenly Father knew I needed to know other like minded saints LIVED.
Gratefully,
Kandee

Can I cheat and pick two?

When I have on my theologian hat, my favorite essay is "The Weeping God of Mormonism." Like Gene, my favorite aspects of LDS theology deal with the idea of eternal progression and how God is right here in the midst of the fray working alongside us, encouraging us, and calling us to partake even more of the Divine Nature. Believing that God truly cares, even weeps as we choose against our best interests, is a core aspect of my testimony. I'm grateful for the way Gene put these ideas that I'd felt and cherished for a long time into such an elegant essay.

When I'm in the midst of struggles with boredom in church meetings and find myself misunderstood by members of my ward, I have to give the nod of favorite essay to Gene's classic "Why the Church Is As True As the Gospel." If indeed this universe's main purpose is soul-making, the LDS church and its way of organizing itself geographically and with lay leadership is, as Gene argues, without parallel in helping move us (if we're willing, of course) toward greater largeness of soul as we have opportunity after opportunity to learn to love people who at first don't seem very lovable. Whenever I tire of the battle, I think of Gene and this essay and keep soldiering on--and always (though not always immediately) find a good result.

I'm so very disappointed I won't be attending Sunstone this year and will miss this session to celebrate Eugene England and this website. Makes me wanna cry. But still, there IS this website, and I'm looking forward to diving more deeply into it to remember and to expand the influence that Eugene England has had on my life, my thinking, and my writing, both directly and indirectly. What a legacy! I feel privileged to have known Gene England even a little bit--and to know, even better, his son Mark as a good friend. This father lives on in his writing and in the thousands of people's lives he's touched, but also very much in his son.
